A Metso-led crushing plant rebuild has resulted in a 30 drop in primary crusher power draw at Norstone Tau quarry near Stavanger in Norway. Guy Woodford reports.
When an investment in brand new equipment is not feasible a rebuild is an option that can also result in significant improvements to a quarry business. This was the case at 674 HeidelbergCements 8823 NorStone Tau quarry in 2012. Located on Norways southwest coast near Stavanger Tau is Norstones largest plant in the country processing 2.1 million tonnesyear of hardrock aggregates. Around a third of the quarrys production is shipped for export while the rest is sold in Norway with the biggest customers being asphalt producers.
The primary gyratory crusher had seen its best days and was consuming excessive amounts of power. The quarry was looking for ways to boost short-term production capacity and the primary just couldnt keep up. But a bigger expansion was also on the horizon likely to include an investment in an in-pit primary crushing solution in five to seven years. So how to solve the interim bottlenecks
Norstone decided to call on 448 Metsos knowledge to assess the situation. The existing primary crusher a Svedala Superior 54-74 had been commissioned in 1984. After careful evaluation the decision was made to replace the spider the top shell and the bottom shell with the same parts from a Metso 54-75 gyratory crusher.
Due to the nature and scope of the project Metso experts were frequently on site to share experiences and requirements with Norstone. Countless hours of measuring drawing and designing ensued. Metso had to figure out how to increase the crushers capacity while lowering the power draw. The final touch wear part design also played a key role in the outcome of the project.

According to Reumont the concave segments now last for about 2.4 million tonnes which was also the goal. At first Metso was on site every three months to help follow and monitor wear and to establish a routine.
But the real work of optimising and fine tuning is only just starting. I think that there is always room for more improvement however small so we will keep monitoring this and working to maximise the optimisation Reumont says.
In time for the new year the management of the quarry operation opted for a rebuild of the primary crusher station this included the replacement of a stationary integrated excavator and the installation of a new monitoring cabin for primary crusher operation.
The winterspring of 2019 was a busy one for the AIM Industrial Team handling the major shutdown work at both Bowmanville and St. Maryx27s Ontario cement plants. Partly for our safety and fall-arrest program where everyone is tied off especially in this type of environment AIM was hired to rebuild this Primary Crusher below.
Rock is blasted free in the quarry where this crusher is. Front-end Loaders bring the rock and dump it into thecone. Above the cone is a jack-hammer looking like a long robotic arm. The large rock bouldersare broken up by the above hammer. As the mandrel in the center rotates it causesthe rock to break up into even smaller pieces against the cone-wallswhich thenfall through onto a conveyor belt below transporting it to the Secondary Crusher.
This was a heavy-duty rock-crushing equipment project which requiredhigh-level planning and execution. AIMx27s heavily experiencedMillwrighting and Rigging tradespeople once again rose to the challenge went safely home every day and made another loyal customer happy.
The cone of silence. Safety awareness is always present being tied off for fall-arrest.

The plan from the beginning was to replace the stationary excavator with a mobile .
These rotors are used in recycle crushers handling concrete slabs asphalt slabs or in light duty primary crushers where the top feed size is typically less than a 30quot cube. The rotor body is of solid construction in back of the hammers with 6quot wedge discs protruding up in front of the hammers.
This drop-in platform provides handrails and decking around the top opening of the crusher. To be used during crusher maintenance when the pocket is clean and the spider has been removed. With the primary corral in place workers can be in the dump pocket without any annoying lifelines. All of our other crusher rebuild tooling can be used while the primary corral is in place.
