Chromite can be challenging to identify. Several properties must be considered to differentiate it from other metallic ores. Hand specimen identification of chromite requires a consideration of color specific gravity luster and a characteristic brown streak. The most important clue to identifying chromite is its association with ultrabasic igneous rocks and metamorphic rocks such as serpentinite.
Chromite is sometimes slightly magnetic. This can cause it to be confused with magnetite. Chromite and ilmenite have very similar properties. Careful observations of hardness streak and specific gravity are required to distinguish these minerals in hand specimens.
Magnesium frequently substitutes for iron in chromite. A solid solution series exists between the mineral chromite FeCr2O4 and the isomorphous mineral magnesiochromite MgCr2O4. Intermediate specimens can be rich in iron FeMgCr2O4 or magnesium MgFeCr2O4. For convenience in communication these minerals are often referred to collectively as chromite.

Small amounts of chromite are found in many types of rock. According to data from the International Chromium Development Association ICDA global chromite ore and concentrate production totaled 29.4metric tons in 2014 Richard 2015. Data from the US Geological Survey USGS estimated world production in 2014 at 29metric tons with South Africa at 15metric tons followed by Kazakhstan at 4metric tons India at 3metric tons and Turkey at 2.4metric tons. Other countries producing chromite ore include Albania Australia Brazil Finland Iran Madagascar Oman Pakistan Philippines Russia and Zimbabwe Fig.11.3.

Fig.11.4 shows the chromite production capacity of major producers between 1994 and 2014based on data from USGS across the world. Chromite ore is mined in over 20 countries but about 80 of production originates from four countries in 20072009 South Africa accounted for 37 of the worldx27s production with both India and Kazakhstan accounting for around 16 and Turkey for 8 Papp 2008 2009 ICDA 2010.
